MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES - WE'RE NOT ALL THE SAME

[LISTEN TO A SUMMARY]

The concept of Multiple Intelligences was first published by Gardner in 1979, where he defined 7 different intelligences that we all have in different amounts. (verbal-linguistic, interpersonal, bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, intrapersonal, mathematical-logical, rhythmic-musical.) Others have defined different types of intelligences in other groupings.

In Gardner's grouping 'verbal-linguistic' includes both the written and the spoken word. The Learning Disability field often divides students into three groupings. Visual Learners, Auditory Learners and Tactile/Kinesthetic learners.

Visual Learners: learn through seeing....they may think in pictures and learn best from visual displays including: diagrams, overhead transparencies, videos, and handouts. They would prefer to read a textbook than have it read to them.

Auditory Learners: learn through listening... They learn best through verbal lectures, discussions, talking things through and listening to what others have to say. Auditory learners interpret the underlying meanings of speech through listening to tone of voice, pitch, speed and other nuances. Written information may have little meaning until it is heard.

Tactile/Kinesthetic Learners learn through moving, doing and touching, they learn best through a hands-on approach, actively exploring the physical world around them.

We all know people who follow oral directions better than written ones, People who require explanations of diagrams, graphs, or maps. People who would rather listen to music than look at a piece of art. These are auditory learners. They will absorb and understand a web site better if it has a human host, a voice explaining and guiding them through the experience. Others will not.

Attention to Multiple Intelligences should be a key concept in media development.
